Delegate Hugo's Repeal of Abuser Fees Effective Immediately
Centreville, VA (March 27, 2008)Today in Richmond, Delegate Tim Hugo’s bill to totally repeal Virginia’s abusive driver fees was signed into law by Governor Kaine. Less than nine months in existence, the abusive driver fees caused a chorus of disapproval among thousands of Virginian’s across the state since day one.
HB1243 is a total repeal of the abusive driver fees, and is effective immediately with the Governor’s signature. This bipartisan compromise to repeal the fees will provide a refund for motorists who have already paid the fees, and will also forgive any remaining fines.
“This repeal marks the end of a year-long nightmare that was the abusive driver fees,” proclaimed Delegate Hugo, “I heard the outcry over the abuser fees and I am very happy to have worked with colleagues from both sides of the aisle to construct a total repeal of this disaster.”
HB1243 was referred to a bipartisan conference committee, in which Delegate Hugo was selected to be a conferee. The committee met with representatives from the Governor’s Office, The Attorney General’s office, the Supreme Court, DMV, VDOT, and the Office of the Comptroller. After the committee agreed on the appropriate language for the substitute; HB1243 was accepted by the House and Senate, and today was signed into law by Governor Kaine.
