Delegate Hugo Co-sponsors Autism Legislation

Posted February 23, 2010 by Tim Hugo | 1 Comment

On Monday February 23rd, Delegate Tim Hugo was interviewed on WAMU 88.5, American University Radio.  This year the Virginia General Assembly is tackling legislation that would mandate coverage for Autism treatment.  The bill, Senate Bill 464, would mandate coverage for treatment of autism spectrum disorder for children between the ages of two and six.

The bill easily passed the Senate by a vote of 27-13.  Delegate Hugo has signed on as a patron to this bill but believes that the bill is going to face tougher scrutiny in the House.

“Democrats and Republicans have been hesitant to vote for this because of the potential increases in insurance rates,” says Hugo.

Yet, included in the bill is the option for insurers to opt out if the cost is too high.  By narrowing the coverage to children between the ages of two and six and by giving insurers a chance to opt out, autism advocates hope that the bill will gain support in the House.

Senate Bill 464 is scheduled to be heard Tuesday in a Commerce and Labor subcommittee.
